How to gain Admission Into University In Nigeria.

In Nigeria candidates can gain/secure admission into universities either through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Candidates or Direct Entry (DE) Candidates, its based on the choice of the candidates.

UTME Candidates are those candidates seeking admission into universities as a fresh/newly candidates, this UTME candidates starts their journey from UG one (100 Level ). Direct entry candidates are the candidates who seeking admission into universities in Nigeria as continue. DE candidates starts their journey from UG two (200 level). Direct entry admission specifically giving to a candidates who have already completed their ND, NCE or having A-Level such IJMB, JUMPED only.

Step By Step Of How To Get Admission As UTME Candidates Into University In Nigeria

Getting admission into a university in Nigeria typically involves the following steps:

Step 1. Choose a Course and University: Candidates Who seeking admission into a university in Nigeria should decide on the course he want to study and also chose the university desire to Study there. Chosing the course of study and the university of study is a critical journey of any candidates seeking admission into a university in Nigeria. Admission seekers are advised to make a research of universities offering your desire course of study and their requirements.

Step 2. Meet the Entry Requirements: Candidates seeking admission into a university in Nigeria should have the mandatory requirements for securing admission into a university. Candidates to be eligible for admission into any university in Nigeria must have obtain a minimum of 5 O’Level credits (WAEC, NECO, NABTED or any equivalent certificate) in relevant subjects, including General Mathematics and English Language, in no more than two 2 sittings. Candidates Should always bear in mind that there is some courses may have specific subject requirements.

Once a candidate successfully registered with JAMB should wait for the commencement of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Conducted by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Each year JAMB is responsible for set off the Cut Off Mark for entering into universities in Nigeria.

This UTME is mandatory for any candidate who seeking admission into universities in Nigeria and must have scored a minimum mark before considering for admission. For example last year JAMB fixed 140 as a minimum cut off Mark for entering into universities in Nigeria.

Candidates seeking admission must pay attention! of the following critical factors: Select your preferred universities and the courses of study during registration, and study hard and prepare for the exam using the JAMB syllabus and past questions.

Step 4. Pass the UTME: Candidates must have scored a minimum or above the cut off mark set by JAMB and the university you applied to study. It all depends, some courses are competitive courses and may require higher scores.

Step 5. Participate in Post UTME/Screening: Some Universities may conduct post UTME and some may not, its all depends of the university you applied to. Most universities in Nigeria conduct Post UTME exams and or screening after Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Candidates to have a chance of getting admission into universities in Nigeria should pay attention! of the following Tips:

Candidates apply and attend the Post UTME for your chosen university if the Post UTME is going to take place. Candidates are advised to choose the desire university of study as their first choice.This is because most universities in Nigeria not considering second choice of admission, candidates who choose the universities as their second choice may not offer admission study into such universities.
Candidates achieve a good score to increase their chances of admission: Candidates who scored highest in UTME and post UTME are the once considering for admission first before other candidates are considered. Candidates are advised to work hard no matter how to get the massive Mark for increase your chances of getting admission. Step 6. Check Admission Lists Via JAMB CAPS and School Admissions Portal: After a candidates participate in Post UTME/Screening, most of universities release admission lists on their admissions websites or JAMB CAPS (Central Admissions Processing System). Candidates are advised to always check for admission on both JAMB CAPS and School admissions Website to see if your name appears on the list.

Step 7. Accept the Admission: once a candidates offered admission, he/she will see a button tap where they can accept or reject their admission on JAMB CAPS. Candidates should understand the following Admission status explained in detail below:

i) Admitted: This is the first type of admission status on JAMB CAPS. If a candidates seeing admitted on their JAMB CAPS, this shows that you have been offered admission to study a course you have applied.

ii) Admission In Progress: This is the second type of admission status on JAMB CAPS. If a candidates seeing admission in progress in their JAMB CAPS, this shows that the JAMB is working on their admissions status and they will definitely admitted later.

This admission in progress status is usually takes 24 hours, 48 hours and or even a week before check to admitted. Candidates with this admission status don’t worry you will be admitted no matter how long it takes.

iii) Not Admitted: This is the last type of admission status and which is very bad status. If a candidates seeing Not admitted on their JAMB CAPS, this indicates that, they are not admitted and they wouldn’t considering for admission into university they have applied for. One option to this admission status, wait for a JAMB to offer you admission into any available universities and it’s not necessary that JAMB must offer you an admission into other universities. Keep praying with regards to Not admitted status.

Step 8. Registration and Resumption Date: After successfully of the Step 1 to 7. Candidate should attend the university for registration and wait for the resumption date, candidates should complete the universities registration process, including the following:

Submission of required documents (O’Level results, JAMB results, birth certificate, etc.).
Payment of tuition fees.
Resume lectures as per the university’s schedule.
